Why a checklist helps

Replacing a hot water system is usually a rushed decision, because the old one has stopped. A few minutes of planning can stop you from paying for the wrong size or type, or from missing paperwork you are owed.

Rules on licences, certificates and rebates differ by state and territory. Where an item mentions them, check your state's rules and your state plumbing regulator's website.

How to use this checklist

Work through each phase in order. Tick an item when it is done or when the quote answers it. Anything left unticked is a question for your plumber. Use it with the plumber cost guide to see what drives the price.

Frequently asked questions

Should I choose gas, electric or heat pump?

It depends on your home, your household and what the plumber can install. Ask each provider to explain the running costs and installation needs, and compare them in writing.

Do I need a certificate after the job?

In many places, yes. The certificate or notice and who lodges it depend on your state, so check your state's rules and ask your plumber before work starts.

Can I claim a rebate for a heat pump?

Possibly. Eligibility depends on the system and your state, so check your state regulator and the Clean Energy Regulator, and ask your plumber what applies to the system quoted.

Who removes the old unit?

Often the plumber, but not always. Check the quote says it includes removal and disposal.
