What a red flag is, and is not

A red flag is a reason to ask a question, not proof that a provider is dishonest. Plenty of good providers write short quotes in a hurry. The point is to notice gaps early, while it costs you nothing to ask.

Rules on licences, deposits and warranties differ by state and territory. Where an item touches one of those, check your state's rules and your state regulator's website.

How to use this checklist

Tick an item when the quote clears it. Anything you cannot tick is a question to put to the provider, ideally by email so the answer is in writing. If you cannot get a straight answer, that tells you something too.

Frequently asked questions

Is a very low quote always a red flag?

No, but it is a reason to check. Compare the scope, materials and exclusions with the other quotes, and ask the provider what is different.

Is it normal to be asked for a deposit?

Often, yes, but the allowed amount and the rules differ by state and territory. Check your state regulator's website before you pay, and keep a receipt.

What if the provider will not put the quote in writing?

Treat that as a warning sign. A written quote protects both sides and is the only fair basis for comparing providers.

What should I do if I spot several red flags?

Ask the provider about each one in writing. If the answers do not satisfy you, move on. You can compare other providers through Service1. It is free for customers.
