Why quotes are hard to compare

Three quotes for the same job often describe three slightly different jobs: different materials, different inclusions, different things left out. The lowest number is only the best deal if the work being priced is the same.

How to use this checklist

Work through the list with your three quotes in front of you. Tick an item only when all three quotes meet it; if one does not, ask that provider. Anything you can't tick is a question to ask before you decide.

Frequently asked questions

Should I always choose the cheapest quote?

Not automatically. If a quote is much lower than the others, check whether it covers the same scope, materials and cover. The goal is the best value for the same work.

How many quotes should I get?

Three is a common balance between a fair comparison and your time. More than that rarely adds information.

What if a provider won't put a quote in writing?

Treat it as a warning sign. A written quote protects both sides and is the basis for comparing providers.

Can Service1 help me get comparable quotes?

Yes. Tell us the job and your suburb and we'll bring the right providers together so you can compare them. It is free for customers.
