How a gas fitter works out the price
A gas fitter usually charges a call-out or service fee to attend, then time on site at an hourly rate, plus parts. Many standard jobs, such as connecting a cooktop or oven, are quoted as one fixed price. Larger jobs such as a new gas line depend on the length of the run, the pipe and how hard the access is, so they are quoted after a site visit. The hourly rate has to cover more than wages: the Fair Work Plumbing and Fire Sprinklers Award, which counts gasfitting as plumbing work, sets a minimum of $29.45 an hour for a level 1 trade classification from 1 July 2026, and the charge-out rate also pays for the vehicle, tools, insurance, licence and paperwork.
- Call-out or service fee to attend and assess the job
- Time on site at an hourly rate, or a fixed price for a standard job
- Parts and materials: pipe, fittings, flexible hoses, regulators and valves
- Pressure testing and checks for gas escapes after the work
- Compliance certificate or notice that the work is safe, issued by the licensed fitter
- Loading for after-hours, weekend or public holiday work
- GST on the total
Worked example: Connect a gas cooktop to an existing gas point, business hours (illustrative, not a quote)
- Call-out and assessment
- $120
- Labour, first hour at $150 an hour
- $150
- Flexible hose, fittings and pressure test
- $30

What it costs, by scenario
Low, typical and high prices. Built on 19 October 2026 from five city price tables in one compiled cost guide (all state they include GST), two Airtasker marketplace pages, the Fair Work plumbing award and state regulator pages. Most scenario figures rest on that one compiler's tables, so they are weaker than a figure two independent publishers share; the marketplace sources do not itemise gas jobs. Because the other sources do not state a GST basis, the guide's GST basis is marked unconfirmed.

Find a providerWhat changes the price
- Type of job. Connecting an appliance to an existing point is a fixed, short job. A new gas line, a flue or a meter move involves pipe, access and more time.
- Distance and access. A longer pipe run, work under a floor or in a roof, or digging for an outside run costs more in time and materials.
- Time of day. After-hours, weekend and public holiday work usually carries a loading. We found no firm percentage for gas work, so ask for it before work starts.
- Appliance and parts. A standard flexible hose and fitting cost little. A larger flued heater, a regulator or a new valve add to the parts bill.
- Natural gas or LPG. Bottled gas and natural gas use different fittings and certificates. Converting appliances between them is a separate job.
- Location. Wages, travel time and demand differ across cities and regions. See the metro and regional note below.
What's usually included, and what isn't
Usually included
- Travel to your home and assessment of the job
- Labour for the agreed work
- Standard fittings, flexible hoses and sealing for a connection
- Pressure testing and checking for gas escapes
- A compliance certificate or notice for the new work, where the state requires one
Often extra
- The appliance itself, such as a cooktop, oven or heater
- Flue work, roof or wall penetrations and making good afterwards
- Digging, trenching or concrete cutting for an outside gas line
- Moving or upgrading the gas meter, which the network provider may charge for
- Electrical work on an appliance, which needs a licensed electrician
Metro and regional differences
Metro: Capital cities have more gas fitters and more competition for standard jobs, but higher wages and travel and parking time keep hourly rates up. In the compiled guide, Sydney's hourly range ($115 to $230) sits above Adelaide's ($92 to $185).
Regional: Our sources do not give separate regional figures, so treat the ranges as a national guide. Outside the cities, a longer drive can add to the call-out, and fewer gas fitters means fewer quotes to compare. Properties on bottled gas rather than a mains connection need different fittings.
Licensing and compliance
Gas fitting must be done by a licensed gas fitter in every state and territory we checked, and DIY gas work is illegal.
Primary regulator pages: New South Wales, Building Commission NSW, whose page says you need the right licence or certificate to do plumbing, draining or gasfitting work; Queensland, the QBCC, which lists installing or replacing gas water heaters as notifiable work, where the plumber registers a Form 4 within 10 business days of invoicing and gives you a copy; Western Australia, where the Plumbers Licensing Board licenses plumbers and Building and Energy runs the notice system; and the ACT, Access Canberra, which publishes plumber notes under the Water and Sewerage Act 2000 but whose page does not mention gas.
For the other jurisdictions we could not open a regulator page for gas fitting, so the following come from a compiled cost guide and are secondary: Victoria, the Building and Plumbing Commission is named as licensing plumbers and gas fitters, with a compliance certificate issued; South Australia, Consumer and Business Services is named as licensing gas fitters; Tasmania, Consumer, Building and Occupational Services is named as recording gas fitting as a licensed occupation; Western Australia, the guide says Building and Energy licenses gas fitters and the fitter lodges a Notice of Completion; the ACT, the guide says gas fitters are licensed there and must give the owner a compliance certificate; and the Northern Territory, the guide says a licensed fitter must do the work and give a certificate of compliance but does not name the regulator.
In New South Wales a certificate of compliance (natural gas) or certificate of inspection (bottled gas) should carry the fitter's name and licence number.
Ask for the licence number, check it on the regulator's register, and keep the certificate with your house papers.
Before you accept a quote, check
- Is the call-out fee separate, or included in the first hour?
- Is the price fixed for the job, or hourly with a minimum charge?
- Does the quote name the licence number, and will you receive the compliance certificate or notice?
- Which parts are supplied, and does the price include the pressure test?
- What is the after-hours loading, if the job runs late?
- Does the quote say whether GST is included?
Frequently asked questions
How much is a gas fitter per hour in Australia?
In the compiled city guides, capital-city hourly rates run from about $92 to $230, with typical figures between $140 and $170. Brisbane's range is $100 to $200. A fixed price is more common for standard jobs.
How much does it cost to connect a gas cooktop?
About $160 to $470 in the Melbourne and Perth tables, with other capitals between about $140 and $520. The cooktop itself is extra, and moving the gas point is a different job.
How much does a new gas line cost?
About $525 to $2,100 in the Melbourne and Perth tables and up to $2,300 in Sydney. The length of the run, the access and any digging drive the price, so ask for a quote after a site visit.
Do I need a licensed gas fitter?
Yes. Gas work must be done by a licensed gas fitter, and the licensing page for your state is listed in the licensing section. Ask for the licence number and the compliance certificate.
What should I do if I think I can smell gas?
Leave the area and call your gas network's emergency line before you call a fitter. The compiled guide lists network numbers for some cities, so check your network's page.
Should I take the cheapest quote?
Compare the same scope first: parts, the pressure test, the certificate and clean-up. A much lower price can leave out the certificate or the parts.
