Why a checklist helps

Solar and battery quotes can look very different even when the systems are similar, because brands, sizes, inclusions and rebate handling vary. A checklist helps you ask every installer the same questions.

Rebates, grid connection rules and licensing differ by state and territory, and they change. For rebates, check the Clean Energy Regulator (cleanenergyregulator.gov.au) and your state's rules. We do not quote rebate amounts here because they may be out of date.

How to use this checklist

Work through each phase in order. Tick an item when you have it or when the quote answers it. Anything left unticked is a question for the installer, ideally asked by email so the answer is in writing. Use it with the solar and battery cost guide to see what drives the price.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a battery with solar?

No. Many homes install panels only. A battery suits some households and goals, so ask each installer to explain what it would and would not do for you, and whether you can add one later.

Can I get a rebate for solar or a battery?

Possibly. Rebates and their conditions change and differ by state, so check the Clean Energy Regulator and your state's rules, and ask the installer to explain what applies to the system they have quoted.

How do I check an installer is accredited?

Ask for their accreditation details and check them with the accrediting body, the Clean Energy Council. Also check the electrician's licence on your state regulator's register.

What if one quote is much cheaper than the rest?

Compare the panels, inverter, battery and inclusions line by line. A lower price can mean smaller or lesser-known equipment, or items left out. Use the compare-three-quotes checklist.

What paperwork should I keep?

Keep the signed quote, invoice, warranties, manuals, commissioning report and any electrical safety certificate. Your state's rules decide which certificates apply.
