Why a checklist helps

Small jobs add up. A written list lets you group them into one visit, get a fair quote and make sure nothing is forgotten on the day.

What a handyman may do without a licence differs by state and territory. Plumbing, gas and electrical work usually need a licensed provider, and some states set a value limit for unlicensed work. Check your state's rules and your state regulator's website.

How to use this checklist

Tick items as you complete them. Anything unticked is a question for the handyman. Use it with the handyman cost guide and the hourly callout estimator to understand how time and callout fees add up.

Frequently asked questions

What can a handyman do without a licence?

It depends on your state and the job. Plumbing, gas fitting and electrical work usually need a licence. Check your state regulator's website before you hire.

Should I ask for a fixed price or an hourly rate?

A fixed price suits a clear list. An hourly rate suits uncertain jobs. Either way, ask for any minimum or callout fee in writing.

Will a handyman supply the materials?

Some do and some do not. Ask who buys what and how it is charged, and keep the receipts.

How do I get the most from one visit?

Group jobs by room and priority, send photos in advance and ask the handyman to confirm what they can complete in one visit.
