How a window coverings installer works out the price

A window coverings installer prices either the fitting alone or the whole job. Fitting alone is usually charged per blind or per job, or by the hour. A supply-and-fit job adds the product, which is priced by window size, fabric and type. Made-to-measure products are often quoted per window after a measure, so two windows of different sizes can differ a lot in price.

  1. Measure the windows, usually at a home visit
  2. Choose the product, fabric and any extras such as motorisation or a track
  3. Product cost, priced by the blind or by the window size
  4. Fitting labour, per blind, per job or per hour
  5. Removal of old blinds or curtains, if you want that done
  6. GST on the total, if the quote does not already include it

What it costs, by scenario

Low, typical and high prices. Built on 19 October 2026 from three Airtasker cost pages (marketplace) and two supplier pages (a Melbourne blinds seller and a shutter company), plus the national safety standard for corded blinds. Where the marketplace pages disagree we use the range they share. Several scenarios rest on one source and are flagged in their notes. None of the sources states a GST basis.

What changes the price

  • Window size. Wider and taller windows need more fabric or timber, so the product price rises with the size of the window.
  • Type of covering. A ready-made roller blind costs far less than a made-to-measure Roman blind, curtain set or timber shutter.
  • Supply or fit only. Fitting a blind you already own is a labour charge. Supply and fit adds the product, which is most of the price.
  • Motorisation and wiring. Motors add to the price of each blind, and a blind that needs power may need a licensed electrician for the wiring.
  • Window shape and access. Bay, corner and arched windows, high windows and tight recesses take more measuring and fitting time.
  • Location. Hourly labour rates differ between cities. See the metro and regional note below.

What's usually included, and what isn't

Usually included

  • Measuring the windows, which is often free when you buy a made-to-measure product
  • The product, if the quote is for supply and fit
  • Fitting and testing that each blind or curtain runs properly
  • A cord safety label and installation that follows the national cord safety standard

Often extra

  • Removing and disposing of old blinds or curtains, unless quoted
  • Motors, remotes and hubs, which are usually priced as extras
  • Fixed wiring for a powered blind
  • Repairs to the wall, frame or window surround
  • GST, if the quote does not say it is included

Metro and regional differences

Metro: Airtasker lists average hourly labour rates of about $40 in Melbourne, $44.50 in Perth, $50 in Sydney, $55 in Brisbane and $60 in Adelaide. Capital cities have more installers, but higher wages and parking time push labour rates up.

Regional: Our sources do not give regional prices for window coverings. Outside the cities, a longer drive can add travel time to a fitting job, and made-to-measure orders may take longer to arrive. Treat the ranges as a national guide.

Licensing and compliance

We did not find a licence for fitting blinds, curtains or shutters on the pages we read, and we have not confirmed the position in each of NSW, VIC, QLD, WA, SA, TAS, the ACT and the NT.

Check with your state regulator if the job involves building work, such as altering a window frame, or wiring for a powered blind, and ask the installer who will do that part and for their licence number.

One national rule applies everywhere we looked.

The Competition and Consumer (Corded Internal Window Coverings) Safety Standard 2014, made under the Australian Consumer Law and in force from 1 January 2015, sets installation rules for corded blinds and curtains in homes.

A loose cord must not form a loop of 220 mm or more less than 1,600 mm above the floor, installation must follow the instructions on the retail packaging, and the installer must attach a label with the name and contact details of the person or company responsible.

This applies to anyone installing for a home, so ask your installer how they will meet it.

Before you accept a quote, check

  • Is the price for supply and fit, or fit only?
  • Is the measure free, and does the price hold if the measurements change?
  • Does the quote say whether GST is included?
  • Are motors, remotes, tracks and brackets in the price?
  • Will old blinds be removed and taken away?
  • How will cords be secured so they meet the cord safety standard?

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to have blinds installed?

If you already own the blinds, labour is about $80 to $150 a blind in the range two Airtasker pages share. Supplying and fitting a custom roller blind starts around $100 to $250 a blind according to one Melbourne seller.

Is it cheaper to buy blinds and have them fitted separately?

It can be, because ready-made blinds cost less than made-to-measure ones. One seller lists ready-made blinds at $30 to $80 and custom blinds from $100. You then pay a fitting charge and take on the risk of buying the wrong size.

How much do plantation shutters cost?

One shutter company says smaller windows could cost about $300 and a bedroom window $1,500 or more. A Melbourne seller lists PVC shutters from $230 a shutter and timber from $280. Ask for a measured quote, because size sets most of the price.

Do blinds with cords have to meet a safety rule?

Yes. A national standard sets how corded blinds and curtains must be installed in homes, including a label with the installer's name and contact details. Ask how your installer will secure the cords.

What is the hourly rate for fitting blinds or curtains?

Airtasker lists average labour rates of about $40 to $60 an hour, depending on the city. Many fitters quote per blind or per job instead of by the hour.
